To all intents and purposes, we’ve been a little quiet of late? - externally at least… however behind the scenes we’ve resembled something akin to a Victorian work house fused with some kind of highly illegal far Eastern sweatshop… There’s been all sorts of planning and plotting towards the main focus of Spring 2012, namely the release of Great Adventure - The Album… Plus… Andy and John have just recorded the second of their new show - The Sounds of the Suburbs on rechargedradio.com It will be broadcast tomorrow night form 10pm and incase you miss it, repeated each Tuesday until they record the next one for February. If none of these fit into your busy lives, have no fear, as you can simply download the podcasts for free from itunes a couple of days after the broadcast.

To whet your appetites, here’s a selection of the bands and artists featured this week!

Turbulent times have left ones brain off kilter in recent weeks… So much so we missed this! Huge apologies to Simon for not thanking him.

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 26, 2011 AT 2:57PM

We’ve all got potential,

Some of us as WAGS or so The Scratch would have us believe.

Last weekend was the launch of their new single WAG Potential at the Pioneer Club in St Albans, and as it was the wifes turn to drive I did the decent thing and paid for the tickets for us. Having seen them play a few times it is always guaranteed to be a good night, and as this was also being broadcast live onRecharged Radio I was pretty sure Andy and the guys would do their best to entertain. The Pioneer Club is where Enter Shikari practice, and is a central point for local bands to practice and play, and is a fairly sizeable venue with a decent stage set up.

A couple of local bands started the evening off, As Daylight Dies then The Vertigos and finally the Dark Stares who I had also seen before but seemed a bit harder this time round while we watched from the balcony. Having “enjoyed” a few beers with the band and also Minki of 50Ft Woman fame, Jord from Recharged thought it would be a good time for my debut on Recharged. The last few times I was on the radio was in the early days of Radio 6 (before it was 6 Music) where there were so few listeners that ringing in for any competition was almost a guarantee of winning it. There were no prizes this time, but should you want to listen to me, and all the bands as well, the link is here.

The bar emptied as the opening of the set was the showing of the video for WAG Potential on the screen and the band took to the stage. Andy wearing his trademark white jacket that must spend more time being cleaned than worn the way he throws himself off the stage. Starting with Teen Idol, which regular Recharged Radio listeners will know well, there followed a set mixing some of the old favourites with a lot from the new (yet to be released) album had all the band enjoying themselves which enthusiasm transfered itself to the crowd. A Ramones cover version slips into the middle of the set with ease and the intro to Dear Maniac saw Andy change guitar for some reason. A lively enough track at the best of times as the show closer, this one had one of those moments.

As the song came to a close, the moment of horror for whoever the guitar had been borrowed from as it came swinging overhead and crashing into the edge of the stage, leaving the local security guards in two minds as to what to do.

Andy leaped from the stage and disappeared, the guitar in pieces, the body of which is now a piece of “art” on my office wall. The rest of the band seemed a little perplexed, but he soon reappeared and the encore ended with a more than rousing version of Smell The Gas Taps. Band members in the audience, smashed equipment, ears ringing and smiles all round indicate a good night out in anyones book.

Proper indie guitar music on the DIY punk ethic, enjoyment guaranteed.

We write with heavy hearts to inform you all that our proposed Christmas knees up has been cancelled, well to be more accurate we have decided not to go ahead with Thursdays gig at Nambucca due to the fact that the price of the tickets has risen from a £6 advance guestlist to £10 and although some maybe could stretch to this we all felt at such short notice this was too much to ask for a short set, especially considering the current state of everyone’s finances. So big apologies to those who made plans to come to London. We hope you all agree it was too much to ask.

… Tiny Tim will have to make his own arrangements this year.

Happy Christmas.

So who has got WAG Potential? - You lot that’s who!

The Scratch ‘WAG Potential’ single launch party Friday November 18th 2011 at the Pioneer, St.Albans.

With multi generational support from ‘14+’ers’- As Daylight Dies’, ‘Uni darling Indie’ from The Vertigos and the new heavy rock incarnation of Dark Stares, The WAG Potential launch party/70th anniversary of St.Albans legendary Pioneer Youth/skatepark went smashingly well!

Looking from the balcony at the first band, the stage and room had a fantastic retro ‘Rock goes to college’ feel about it ala the classic early 80’s show that saw a BBC 2 film crew set up at a Uni somewhere around the country (usually it seemed Aylesbury?) and you’d be treated to sets by new or up and coming bands like Siouxsie and the Banshees or The Undertones…(Hurry up with that iphone time machine app!)

The Pioneer has had itself a great deal of refurbishment in the last couple years as a result of The ‘Shikari effect’ especially in the PA and stage department. At least one of The Scratch can remember the previous ramshackle set up when he last played here in the early 90’s as part of an unemployed music work shop (during the last recession…Those mothers come round quicker than Strictly come dancing repeats!). The facelift now giving the old place the look and sound of a quality mini Kentish town forum, or as Steve Filth pointed out pre-gig it is now also very remissant of the Lesser Free Trade Hall scene from the film 24 hour Party People.

As the night progressed through eccletically diverse sets from the talented supports, the room in the bar shrank to a premium as numbers swelled to near burstage, thankfully this was averted as the clock struck 10.30, for it was time for The Scratch to join the likes of St.Albans glitterati: Enter Shikari, Friendly Fires and The Zombies as Pioneer headliners.

A large crowd featuring pretty much a who’s who of The Scratch entourage suddenly surged from the upstairs bar as the opening chord of WAG Potentail sprang from the large video screen situated on the back wall of the stage. The great work of messers Teague, Viney, Honest and cast rocked at 10 feet high! Approx 2.30 later, it was then time for the live action!

Appropriately with Jordan and Jamie Recharged (radio) pumping out the feed to the universe on their Friday Forum show, it was Teen idol that kicked the set into life! Super’s beat and Johnny V’s bass rumble instantly channeling devilment up each trousers leg, however tight, however white! You could really tell from the stage that the anticipation of a (long awaited) live show (the first time since mid summer!) had ignited the throng (that and Bar 62’s cheap Prosecco and burgers deal!… We don’t just care about ourselves, we like to boost the wider community too you know, especially in such times of austerity!)

Texture to the flava, Desire to be Thin and probably the best Out Fakin the Fakers (for Lucy as ever!) since late 2007 followed, all jagged and fist tight. A breath and then it was into Narcotic Hearts, Against the Grain and a deliciously frantic Ramones cover of the classic Commando to take us up to halfway. With the ‘auderve’ duly served, the main event kicked in hard. First up all shimmering in ‘bling and malice’ - WAG Potential (newly available at www.thescratch.co.uk don’t forget!) followed by ‘progessque’ newie, No two castles are the same, then straight into Weirder than we are, the mighty 88th day of rain, a resurrected and triumphant Numbers and finally, probably The Scratch’s ‘masterpiece’ Dear Maniac, delivered on this occasion with Andy playing an unaccustomed red guitar (in truth, not before time, as his telecaster had been steadily more and more out of tune since Commando!)

The room heaved and swayed, Bez Hemingway, pushed and antagonised all in arms reach, the ladies swooned :-)… It was bliss to behold and just when you thought the crescendo of crowd noise and exaggerated last ‘E’ chord were the perfect defining moments, the previously mentioned red guitar suddenly became a legend in it’s own three minutes, as it was unceremoniously de-shouldered and smitten against the corner of the stage, three mighty blows and it went smithereening into the air, to huge howls of joy from the assemblage as Andy disappeared breathless backstage, through the massed ranks… “MOOORREEE” shouted the exhilarated crowd… “More?” shouted Steve Filth “YEEEEAAAAHHHHHH!!!!” Shouted the crowd, “You’ll have to do better than that” shouted Steve “Andy’s very shy” “MMMOOOORRREEEEE!!!!!’”.. Suddenley and as if by magic almost Mr.Benn shop keeperesque, crawling between the legs of the front row, he was back… as the opening strains of Critical Mass seeped into the punch drunk psyche… it was now time for mischief…

First off (and as soon as the fivesome were reassembled) a precision foot pedal throw managed to switch off all of Grims pedalboard resulting in a customary roll of eyes to the heavens and a Steve Filth naughty school boy collapse in laughter… The on looking security guys twitched nervously, already shaken by the guitar smash, they were in two minds as to what to do as the errant singer began scalling the lighting rig on a climb to nowhere. They needn’t have feared though for he was soon cavorting, rolling and crawling back into the front row with assorted fans, friends and the frenzied, to a typically anarchic Smell the Gas Taps! Debris and bodies lay in mangled extasy as the for the final time The Scratch bid their amazing following a final goodnight… with the Pioneers mini bar laid waste by our alcholocust gang members, it was soon back to Bar at 62’s for a much needed top up!!!

How many times have we summed up our blogs with ‘that was one of the best gigs we’ve done?’ But, I think after this few who witnessed it would disagree, this had to be a top tenner at least?

In retrospect, there are so many pluses from Friday, it’d be hard not write as much again about each, but in the interests of time we’ll precis, nay, bullet point some of the main ones, plus a few extras for the diary ;-) …

1) Don’t miss the £5 Bar 62 burgers… unreal value!!!

2) Don’t forget to download the podcast at rechargedradio.com next week

3) Those who didn’t on Friday, here’s the link to the WAG potential single: http://shop.thescratch.co.uk/album/wag-potential - please purchase :-)

4) We’ll be announcing our album release date, before Xmas and our return to the Pioneer in our fanzine, so make sure you’re subscribed!!!

All that remains now is the giant list of thank-you’s… In no order, as you are all as important as each other to us!!!!

Thanks to Dave Worm! (Whose loan of one red guitar, has resulted in an urgent need of super glue… no not Super glue… Super glue!), All our Families, the Recharged radio gang, those on duty and those not, crazy Bez ‘The Catalyst’, Ms Fakers and leopardskin Lana, all those who wagged it, Andy B, Andy K, Jem and all at the Pioneer, Steve and his security team for their understanding and restraint ;-) Neil, Danielle, Rich and all at 62’s - glad the gamble paid off ;-), Robbie for his amazing sales!!!, Spurs Simon (as he shall always be to us) and Debs, John’s birthday gang (all 20 or so of them), big mentions to Kelly and Ryan, (arch participants) and the rest of the irrepressible London gang, Trev, Beaver et al, Cheadle the enigma, all our work friends (… sorry to mention the ‘W’ word Davy Niven)… Sam the ‘high priestess’ wag representative and Mr.Robson, Mrs. Super and her bum rubbers (sounds like the name of a new side project?!!), Hug(h)e Davenport and his tache, Super’s sis, The Filth gang, the Hemel two, the nephews, our Tina, Paul and assorted friends and family, Hansi (good to meet in better circumstance). And finally anyone else who doesn’t fit one of those demographics! We love you all!

Oh and just to clarify, that suspicious looking rubber thing Andy produced from his trouser after song two and threw into the front row, it really was the old handle off his amp you filthy minded lot ;-)

See you on the 8 December at Nambucca in Holloway Road, for the end of 2011 as we know it and your last chance of The Scratch until Spring 2012!!! Keep ‘um peeled and thanks again

Thanks to Ade at Tunatheday for making WAG Potential his Tunatheday… and to all of those who contributed with their comments!… I’m guessing Mr C hasn’t seen the video?

http://vimeo.com/27593102

And yes Ade… ‘Great Adventure’ is going to be our 4th album… (release date unconfirmed, but if you think Spring, you won’t be a million miles orf!)…

MrC: “Very smart studio work here. In spite of the thrash it’s clear, dynamically varied and continually interesting, I particularly like the bits where the vocal is left exposed and the instruments drop out, it’s like we’re transported into the singer’s head space.

I’m not one to judge the ethics of the lyric but while the camp delivery suggests to me that there is a comic camaraderie to it’s meaning, it also sounds catty and could be construed as cruel.

As long as there have been people being vain and thoughtless, there have been people poking fun at their behaviour, if we disallow that critique we get into very dangerous waters.”

MrTuna: “I think it more a homage to the world of WAGS Mr C - maybe!”

Jimbob: “Awesome!! Behind the chaos is a bunch of good musicians here, love the lyrics and the whiff of danger from this track. F A N T A S T I C !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

—————————

There’s just 11 days to go now until the launch… so don’t delay, ‘cos these tickets are HOT ;-) !!!!

On sale from Monday 3rd October!

On sale from Monday 3rd October!

Endorse IT 2011 - Bournemouth Echo review mention

Thumbing (or should that be scrolling?) through the internet as we do from time to time looking for soundbites and news, we came across this little snippet, that we’d missed from the highlight of our summer…

Endorse It In Dorset, Sixpenny Handley

11:45am Monday 15th August 2011

By Gavin Haines »

WITH its ragtag line up, kooky clientele and defiant lack of commercialism, eccentric Endorse It is always a breath of fresh air during the busy festival season.

And it was back with a bang at the weekend, as the usually sleepy village of Sixpenny Handley played host to three days of cider-fuelled revelry.

The music kicked off on Friday afternoon as the patrons arrived; The Scratch, a five piece rock outfit from St. Albans proved an early highlight with a set that was good enough to earn them a slot supporting Noel Gallagher on a previous tour. Doubtless their lively performance and catchy tunes earned them a few more fans.

The M25 on a Friday weren’t gonna rock…. And it didn’t, but at least we weren’t driving up from Bath like the 4th Suit!…

Friday night saw us play our second (and certainly not last) gig for Alexis Brookes and her amazing homeless charity musical collective Camden calling… The venue was the famous but threatened with extinction George Tavern on Commercial Road… Sitting perilously close to Olympic 2012 ‘‘re-gen’ territory… It reminded me of Charlie Buckets house in the story about the Chocolate Factory, dwarfed in the long shadow of Canary Wharf… You have to fear that this big old run down but glorious East End boozer may not be around for the CC’s 4th birthday. … Let’s hope it is!…

Anyway onto the night that as was as ever, eclectic to say the least. Tonight though took it to new levels - for not only did it contain, punk, hip hop and natty dreads, it also featured an appearance from none other than the Lord’s only son… (The party had been billed as a Hollywood themed fancy dress, with Alex (in Wonderland) and Dekay and D’mans seemingly the only ones who read the small print…) that was except of course for Jesus aka ‘Ben is a dark horse’ who kicked the night off with a spell binding/haunting guitar infused set, laced with a generous helpoing of razor sharp lyrical Whit. All of this was played out to a backdrop of some excellent Daniel Johnsonesque cartoons, projected onto the back wall… drawn (as we later found out) by a friend of the CC gang who’s sadly no longer around to attend such great nights, but at least Tasha Hollywood’s great talent lives on through.

Next up were the aforementioned ‘Baron village dwelling’ 70’s punks - ‘The 4th suit’, with their straight out of the Roxy 1977 assault! The packed and varied line up then morphed further into a more hip hop/urban tip, first with ACcobra, then with the ace Rukas, (“back after a short live sojourn”)… Until finally, the one we were personally really looking forward to - Dekay and D’mans. As we stated in the last blog these dudes and dudettes rock in a ‘street, hip hop, 60’s funk and Californian acid stylee’ that should be way bigger than it is… The nearest way to describe the music would be classic Beastie boys ‘Ill communication’ era lounge funk, be-jewelled by the diamond sharp D’mans incisive lyrical blow darts…

Then, finally it was time for The Scratch - back playing in surroundings that suit us best, tight, hot and edgy. Our latest short sharp ‘best of ‘set, this time included a lightening fast cover of The Ramones classic ‘Commando’, an extended ‘Teen Idol’ intro, forthcoming single ‘Wag potential’, our prog/Shakari skewed ‘No two castles are the same’ and a ‘Critical Mass’ encore that included a shaky legged table top dance and a flamboyant chair twirl finale, that Marc Bolan (who’s 34th anniversary co-incided with tonights events), would have been proud of!

Massive thanks to Alex and the guys for another excellent night, we can’t wait for the next one (even if you just come to see Dekay and D’mans it’d be well worth the train fare). Giant thanks also go out to newbie Scratchers and Scratchettes - Tatum and her gang for trekking across London in their stylish shoes… We hope its the first of Many and you got home safe guys? And last but by no means least, it was great as ever to see McEwan and all the other familiar faces.

Next stop the WAG launch do - 18 Nov. Keep an eye for ticket news and a few extra special ‘deals’ we’ve got going in conjunction… it’s gonna ROCK!

PS Final, final thanks goes out to all those who sent concerned email’s and txt’s re-the loss of ‘THE’ white jacket… thankfully ‘Super’ had it wedged in the crack…. between the seats in his car!

X
