May 12th - The Launch of a Great Adventure

Many bands do it these days, but we never have. Brave or foolish… We were about to find out! What am I talking about? Playing your album from start to finish of course. Though thinking about it now, I’m not sure that I can remember many who do it on a new album? As those of you who have followed our illustrious career closely will know, we don’t like the idea of taking the loyalty of our fronds and fans for granted. Which is why we once more roped in the assistance of our mate neil the proprietor of our fave local pub bar 62. When playing our wag potential launch party back in November last year, we’d done a similar thing and he’d broken all sales records of his majestic home made burgers. But not only that, we decided we’d also enlist the help of serial gig groover and instigator of the bop. Francis who for tonight would assume his UNi days moniker The Saint - dj extraordinaire. So there you go, that’s the scene. Sounchecking was smooth for the first time in ages the soundman (Justin) was already set up when we arrived and he’d done his homework on our sound (good boy !) so it was soon off to 62 to meet the masses and my 3rd burger in 2 days..that thing about 3’s fish and chips and now burgers!  I was pleased to see how flushed Neil looked as the kitchen chimney was raging like a crematorium by an old peoples home…at least that part of the deal was paying off.

By the time we reached the pioneer around 8 people had began Arriving. We knew our lot were still gorging on chunky chips but the venue decide to move the stage times back 20 mins. Which was sensible but with our crowd train and baby sitter sensitive (yes rockin roll has to accommodate all these days! We were itching to get on.

Paul Hegley band kicked things off with a powerful 3 piece set. Next up we had The Zipheads who carry a great local reputation for their live show and indeed their following… They definitely showed off the former with even a snapped double bass string falling to hault their rock’n’roll /ska punk juggernaut. Excellent stuff, though with the string break their set over ran a bit for which their front man Ray graciously apologised, but it was cool. At last the acid test. You could feel the love and anticipation from the crowd as it willed it to work and so it did. But I have to be honest it was really weird stage side, so used are we to assaulting the senses, the pauses and tempo variations took a little getting used too with the adrenalin boiling in our bones! We’d discussed an encore but thought a 16 song set would be enough.

1) Down in the Alleyway

2) WAG Potential

3) Desire to be thin

4) Narcotic Hears

5) Weirder than we are

6) Let there be Us

7) Don’t play Along

8) 88th Day of Rain

9) Biting on my lip

10) No two castles are the same

11) Great Adventure

12) Against the grain

13) Teen Idol

14) Dear Maniac

15) I relax to Spiral Scratch

16) (smell the) Gas Taps

But we were wrong… such was the fervour as we left the stage, we had to come back… although, the saying was easier than the doing as the stage and pedals had been Gas Tapped!…

At a loss in our exhaustion to come up with a newie, we threw the question out to the audience what do you want? TEEN IDOL!!!! came the united front… and so we did.

Some brilliant performances notably by Lindsay, Sophie, Minki, Jord, Sandra, Kev, Cat, Izzy, lawrence and most definitely Francis.. sorry The Saint, who led the bouncing like a deranged Tigger, he should really have been on stage with us, such was his entertainment value!

It has to said, despite the fantastic reaction of the crowd, it was hard backstage to really appreciate how the night had gone, I think sometimes, it’s very difficult after a gig to take it all in.

We were left in no illusion though when we returned to a rammed bar 62 having thanked Justin and Andy’s K and B for their support at the Pioneer. Everyone to a man/woman were ebullient in their excitement of what they’d seen, and for that we are hugely (as ever) grateful, we have friends and fans like no other!

So it was with great satisfaction that we sipped the first of many late night pints at the aftershow as The Saint propelled us into early morning. Indeed a 5am finale, seemed a fitting way to end two weeks of Great Adventures.

There are far too many people to thank as ever and I can’t single anyone out, you’re all great.

So BIG THANKS to:

CLARE,  LUCY, RICH M, CAT, ISSY, DAVE BARRON,  LINDSAY CHAS, ALISON, DAVE WORM, PETE L, BUZZ, LOZZ -

PAUL , LANA, DENYELLE  and friends, SUPER’S SIS and FAMILY and FRIENDS, MRS SUPER,  Top salesman MATT and friends

SANDRA, KEVIN, SIMON, ANCA, ROD, SARAH, JAKE,  GORDON, SID, DONNA, DEEVID and family, RICH, MEL

TOM, BEA, MINKI, JB, FRANCIS, LAWRENCE, TINA, PAUL, JORD, WHITTY and NEIL, apologies if we’ve missed anyone, but if we did, we love you too!

All that’s left to say is keep your eyes peeled this summer for The Great Adventure single and we’ll see you all again soon!

Album review - AAA Music

Dear Scratchers, as we digest a great few days for the band, here’s a review from http://www.aaamusic.co.uk/2012/05/14/the-scratch-great-adventure/

Great Adventure is the 4th album from St Albans band The Scratch. The album sounds distinctly retro and brings together classic ingredients: harmonies, humour and pinches of English eccentricity in short but sweet 3 minute songs. The band’s influences are classic rock, from the Kinks and Bowie to the punk of the Buzzcocks and Siouxsie and the Banshees. The influence of the Kinks and the Buzzcocks seems to be the most obvious on their music; you can really hear it in their songs. Having opened for the likes of Noel Gallagher, Paul Weller and Echo & The Bunnymen, The Scratch have certainly played to big audiences.

From the first song on the album you can hear that The Scratch very much have a developed sense of sound and style. It has a very polished and experienced sound. The album opens with the catchy Down in the Alleyay with zinging guitar and a retro vocal style reminiscent of the Kinks and the Buzzcocks. You would think that you’d stepped back in time if there hadn’t been the mention of a camera phone somewhere in the lyrics to shake you back into the present day.

Things get even more energetic for the single, (She’s got) WAG Potential.

‘Superficial plastic smile… Spends all evening on her phone… Facebook fever what a diva.’

The Scratch’s modern lyrics carry their vintage sound into the modern world. The sound is both distinctly retro and modern at the same time which makes for a very interesting style.

Desire to be Thin carries on from the theme of the previous song. The lyrics aren’t the best but still The Scratch manage to be ultra catchy with a well built chorus and some funky vocals and guitar.

Narcotic Hearts has a distinct rock’n’roll feel to it with classic rock’n’roll vocals and harmonies.

Weirder Than We Are features some lovely guitar solo work and weird Buzzcocks-esque vocals. This really could be a Buzzcocks song.

Don’t Play Along continues wonderful Buzzcocks style alongside a twist of synth and soaring guitar.

88th Day of Rain rumbles in with rocking guitar and brooding base. This track is quite a deal darker and heavier than some of the songs. Certainly one of the best on the album. Biting on my Lip continues on a similar sound from 88th Day of Rain.

No Two Castles Are the Same has a 80’s goth feel to it with its shadowy guitar and vocals reminiscent of Bauhaus’ Bela Lugosi’s Dead in places. The album certainly gets darker towards the end.

The album ends with Great Adventure with some spacey electronic tinges and rock’n’roll harmonies. Wonderfully eclectic, as is the whole album. A great ending to a fantastically crafted album.

The Scratch Great adventure special - Tonight at 8pm on Recharged Radio

Dear Scratchers, apologies for the short notice! But if you’re not busy for the next half hour you can hear us recorded live at Hackney Road Studios last week where we played tracks from our new album… luckily, you will be able to download the podcast from iTunes incase you can’t!

An alternative Great Escape

So where to begin? Let’s try 6.50 am Wednesday morning, as Super and Andy - The Scratch advance party depart sodden St.Albans… two and a half hours of motorway (and two double sausage and eggs) later and destination Brighton is achieved. Amazingly it’s wetter here. Early start I hear you say, yes, but it wasn’t all pleasure, Super had business to attend too, so Andy took in the Lanes…

Shop after shop of cool clobber, guitar shops and reasonably priced vinyl, what more could you want! As anyone will tell you though, however good the shopping, a mixture of rain and foot slog will eventually take it’s toll on the old bodily hydration, so following the first of three cod and chips (in two days),  a pint of strong European fighting lager was carefully selected and dispatched to quench the thirst.

3 later and Super was back in his civvies and ready to take part. The remaining flyers from an advance Recharged Radio sortie in April, were duly deposited in prime vantage points and it was time to hook up with Jordan and Mrs. Jordan (Lauren) to help formulate a plan of attack for the big day.

£4.80 for a pint of Tiger Beer, is a lot of hard earned… but excitement and then more Tiger Beer quelled the initial eyebrow raisage and thoughts of an EU bailout… Beer turned to thoughts of food, with the arrival of Minki, Mr.Interuption and Pete Robbins, so on recommendation we bundled round the corner to a posh curry house… we were soon bundling out again on realising that two courses with no rice or naan included, was over £21!!!!

‘Luckily’ Super knew somewhere else, although the signs were ominous as the proprietor struggled to find the light switch in his semi dark and soundless restaurant… play, safe we thought, Biryani… a little weird a little Norman Bates hotelesque… but we was starving’ guvnor!… Fed and very watered, with goodbyes said it was back to the hotel, have I mentioned, NO FREE Wi-Fi yet?, it’s the 21st century and we are media types on a hype mission!!!!… add to that the mobile phone reception even out of the building was total crap too, so all the best intended PR ops, were put on hold in favour of a Super snore fest, following a quadruple vodka and tonic at the bar. Tonight, the only tweets were the little birds ‘doing a Tom and Jerry’ round my spinning bonce.

Morning soon crashed into view. With a near sleepless night behind us, it was time for breakfast… Bill’s was a great recommendation in North Road, just down from GAK… (Guitar Amp and Keyboard)… and it wasn’t long before thoughts were turning to the afternoons proceedings…

We arrived at the Queens Hotel (This years venue) to find the previously mentioned ‘Rechargers’ now with added Alex, Dave, Jamie and sound man Malcolm. The PA was there, the stage was there, but there was no drum kit. We were assured it was on it’s way though, so, we decided to sneak out to test whether the Tiger beer was any cheaper in the Fishbowl…

It wasn’t, but it tasted just as good… (damned if you do, damned if you don’t!)… just as we were re-filling, who should walk through the door but our old chum and radio legend of CRMK’s famed ‘Eclectic Plectrum’ radio show… the godlike Hug(h)e ‘Huey D’ Davenport… down especially for the RR event and some ‘shifty’ shenanigans.

Following the obligatory beer and banter, it was back to the venue, The Dash were soon to kick the day into explosive action… but not before (and not the first time) Super saved the day with a stool. This time thankfully it was a bit of bargaining in the GAK Drumstore and not the usual dirty protest…

All that was missing now, was the lights, (they still hadn’t shown), but the volume Malcolm was packing from the PA more than made up for any visual impairment. The room was suddenly awash with curious lanyard wearers and the also just arrived and more to our liking, Twitter legend and general unofficial Recharged PR champion simonj68, accompanied by wife and official (for the day) RR photo guru Debbie… (not forgetting you Mr.Gatiss, but ladies first eh mate :)… already caressing a pint of Becks, it seemed rude not to join him!…

The Dash, soon became Aliceband (thanks to Simon for pointing out that the brass instrument accompanying was a cornet, I would have said trumpet, but I guess you can get more ice-cream in a trumpet?) anyway, I’m a sucker for a bit of brass, so it was most welcome!.

Next up were Canvas Wall, I was definitely getting some Duran bass from these boys… The merch table that we had (as ever) furnished amply was already looking bereft of Scratch sampler cds (if we had a quid for every free cd, we’d given away!)….so I decided to make the short trip across the road to the Wi-Fi less hotel (had I mentioned that?) for a new batch of cds, however on climbing the stares, I was soon sprinting back to the basement for the last one on the merch stand. The reason being, as I was about to leave the Queens, who should be entering, in Tweed jacket and powder blue shorts? - None other than Glasto God - Mr.Michael Eavis… who received said Sampler with a very well spoken, “Thanks very much!”… this had to be a good sign… Glasto here we come… next year of course!)…

It was still hammering down as Grim arrived, just in time for 50ft Woman to take to the stage, thankfully the lights had just turned up too in perfect timing for us to be dazzled by Minki’s glorious spangled hot pants! :-) with the 50ft’s raising the temperature, it was time for a quick cool down in the rain and the 3rd and final cod and chips… We managed to ‘swim’ back in time to see the arrival of John from his motorway hell, catching the opening chords of Cinemawave keeping up the anti.

It was now time for us to get ready, while one of Minki’s bands (from her radio show), Limozine took to the stage. We’d never seen them live before, but we really enjoyed their garage rock attack, giving us the perfect platform for our own assault!…

With so many well known faces in the crowd (including Tom ‘6 Music’ Robinson) it felt like a home town gig! We had decided that although the launch party was imminent and it would be good to debut some newies, that we’d kick off at least with a few from the archives, and so we did. With barely a breath in between, Teen Idol, ATG, Dear Maniac and I Relax to Spiral Scratch we were halfway without a blink!

We followed the ‘hits’ with three off the new album, Weirder than we are, 88th Day of Rain and only for the second time ever, Great Adventure. The set was received very well, but Great Adventure went a storm, we can confirm (though not sure when) it will be our next single… when you get that many good vibes, about a song in our experience, you don’t ignore them… And so that was that, gone in a flash, as with all good things, our 30 mins had come to an end far too quickly, leaving us to depart the stage with the gleeful destructive abandon that is Gas Taps as our finale.

Phew…. What now? The bar of course, where sweaty and panting we managed to collar Tom Robinson (who Simon had in an arm lock ;-) and Limozine with whom we shared CD swappage and some great banter which will hopefully lead to some kind of future collaboration!

Winding down, we now had time to catch a great set by Fake Teak and couldn’t fail to be impressed by Model Staggs… how the hell do two blokes get that sound!?!?

With that, Christmas was over for another year. This was our 3rd Recharged Radio ‘Great Escape alternative experience’… all the previous have gone well, but this one went up a notch. Huge thanks go out to all involved at RR, but especially Jordan, for the support, the gig and the fun, long may it continue.

Exhausted but elated we decided it should be one more Tiger for the road, so, with the RR crew, plus Hug(h)e ‘SBH’ Davenport, (new special RR stand in reporter), we all bundled back into the Fishbowl one last time to reflect on a job well done!

I said I thought it would be very difficult to find a better, more diverse bill anywhere else at the Great (and Alt) Escape as we left the stage a few hours earlier and when you consider that it was totally free to get in too, I’d like to see anywhere else that was better value.

Super… It’s bedtime… we’ve got an album to launch!… No not like that!… if only we’d had Wi-Fi… did I mention….
